Pod-like pooch

by Lee on 1/26/2005

From students to salary men, the iPod is the current gadget of choice. Those distinctive white ear buds are everywhere, and the queues in Ginza’s Apple Store are reminiscent of those once seen in Russian supermarkets. So with this in mind, who can blame Sega for trying to cadge a lift on the iPod express with its new robotic pet?

Ok, so the idog isn’t a music player (as such), and as the name suggests it’s a dog. But take a look at the picture. It’s white and it starts with a little i.

idog

Like its far more advanced (and expensive) robotic cousin Aibo, the idog responds emotionally when touched. Well, different coloured lights come on dependent upon which sensors you stroke. But the main selling point is its musical ability. The idog contains 720 internal musical phrases, and has the ability to improvise tunes when you wave your hand over the phototransistor on its head. However what kind of tunes and how much ability we are talking here I don’t know. It can dance as well though, so that should make up for any musical deficiencies for at least 5 minutes I would have thought.

And whilst all this is not very iPod-like, little robotic rover has an audio jack for an external player. And I don’t need to tell you which is the player of choice…

ipod and idog

Wow, I really am not a fan of the font and spacing of all the design elements used on the box.

That said, the dog looks cute. Gratuitous, but cute.

Since I am a cat, just the thought of any kind of a dog next to my iPod terrifies me! The critter isn’t even cute – looks almost like some kind of bug. Does it walk and have to go out when it wants to eliminate one of its tunes? Can it keep your feet warm on cold winter nights, and lick your face? Haven’t the Sega developers ever seen a REAL dog? What does this DOG cost, anyway?

contact me at sue.thomson@gmail.com if you can help me stop the dig turning off!

i bought one and i like it. in fact, i bought two of them so i could listen in stereo. the one drawback of using them as speakers (other than they’re battery operated and you can’t really get super sound out of battery powered speakers) is that the motor that controls the head and ear movement is REALLY LOUD.

With that said – it doesn’t really count as a speaker. if anything – i’ll hook it up to my home theater for parties when i play music. the rest of the speakers will drown the motor noise out.

**Sue – hold down the nose until you see three lights on the head light up in a triangle shape – that will turn him/her off.**

Reply

24 sue July 7, 2005 at 8:40 pm

Yes.. I know how to turn it off.. but if you’re playing music through it, it seems to switch off after 5 mins.. I want to stop it doing that!

Sue: from what I can tell from the instructions, you have to play with it to get it to continue to play music. It’s really more of a toy than a cute stereo.

Reply

35 Miguel August 29, 2005 at 7:34 am

There are two version of this toy. The Japanese version (“iDog” no-hypen) is more “intelligent” than the American version (I-Dog). While the American only has a light sensor, a button on the nose, and the tail (which only functions to put it on “sleep mode”), the Japanese version has voice recognition capabilities and a few more sensors. The Japanese version is the one who responds accurately to the music being played, the American just does the same thing all the time. So be careful when picking up this in America, if you expect interactive games, voice recognition and the 70 different sounds, get the Japanese version. The American one is a cheap iPod speaker that lights up and moves its ears.

My phototransistor doesn’t seem to be working either. When I press on the nose two times, it just plays the same melody. Haha, I just got the American one today. Wish I could get the Japanese one, but all I need is the speaker skills of this little dog. ^^

For everyone’s info, The iDog is a speaker, but it works fine as is, because it have audio sensors that hear music itself.

It has a jack and cable for connecting your music player to (Anything is fine, MP3, IPod, CD player…Tape Player? x.O), and it gives you the option of listening through your headphones or through the iDog Speakers.

Yeah. I’m not too clear on the Japanese Version, but most of what I said stays true for the American one. (I live in Canada xP).

Hope this helps =D

I am 13 i am turning 14 in febuary. I want to get an i dog but i dont know if i should get it any more by reading all of your coments, and taking about 20 minutes. It looks really cute but after what i read i learned that, the motor to the head and ears make noise, the music dousnt sound very good, and you have to keep on petting/playing with it so it wont stop playing the music. It is basically a toy not a speaker. Allso i will burn a hole threw my moms pocket because of the price(which dousnt really matter but it still does). i need advice if i should buy it or not!!!!! Help me out!!!

I have both the Sega and the Hasbro version dancing infront of me and cant decide which is best to give to my 13yo nephew to listen to him playing his guitar. The USA version is cuter and I love it when he barks. The Japanese version keeps turning off every 5 minutes even when you are playing music which bugs me. I even think that the USA version responds better to me. He may not speak back but he appreciates me talking to him. Am I missing something cos of my age?

Sitting at your computer with a budwieser. Call me when you get out of freakin’ jail. See Ya’ pervert. (by the way everybody, u can get the english manual at Hasbro.com)and “Kyle” just because no one likes you, doesn’t mean you can harass people. She’s not callin’ you buddy! Get over yourself. You guys who are making fun of the I-dog are wrong and probably live in a trailer park and our jealous of those little skinny people toting around cutalicious I-dogs.(if u even know what toting means) Everybody, japanese (sega) I-dogs are locally avalible at most convenience stores. I’m 10 and love the artifical intellagence of such a creative animal. Anyways, my point is cat-lovers stop being jealous and deal with your selfs. Your just jealous, and stop getting the green eye for rich people , who actually HAVE I-dogs.(not that you know what any of this means)I’m 10 and I have more common sense and intellectual purpose then a 30year old man. Take it from a smart person you need an ERS-M7 aibo or this sweet lil’ I-dog. Chow.

It seems the idog in America is made by Hasbro and I found them for between 24-28 bucks. Here is one site that looks to be selling them though it seems it is on backorder or something. http://powermax.com/cgi-global/generate_css_temp.cgi?p=a-drb-4900-idog

The speaker holes are different, the legs are different which changes the posture of the dog to be facing up a bit more, the legs a bit more ajustable with the japanese, the plug goes into the leg of the idog and the batteries go under its chest!! GGRRR im angry on a christmas day lolol

Hi there. I’ve been having fun reading all of your comments and debates about the
I-Dog (English version) vs. the iDog (Japanese version). Well, I’ve
done my research and have come to the conclusion that the iDog is in
fact superior to the I-Dog. Now, you can’t just go and say that the
English version is just a cheap speaker, you have to give them credit-
they are the original makers of this cute iPod accessory. Here’s the
story behind it- Apple Macintosh (the makers of iPod), as many
manufacturers do, sold a portion of their company to Japan and other
countries so that their product could be world-wide. Of coarse Japan
couldn’t sell the English boxes and user manuals, so they translated it
to Japanese. While doing this, the companies that were manufacturing the
products decided to upgrade the I-Dog so that its movements would
synchronize with the music it was playing, and change the name to better
match its ‘owner’- the iPod. Japan did have a right to do this, for in
the contract that they signed when Japan bought a portion of Apple, it
clearly stated that Japan ‘could change things about the products to
better fit the needs of their country’. I’m sure that the English makers
were talking about the language on the packaging and the user manuals,
but, nonetheless, the Japanese decided to use their wits of animal
artificial intelligence on this new product. They have also made iDogs for a more girly audience, called The Lovely iDog. I had asked for a Lovely iDog from Japan and a regular I-Dog from the U.S. this Christmas, and I finally got them both today. I’ve compared the two, and my Lovely iDog from Japan has better sound quality, moves a lot faster and quieter, and has TONS more features than my regular I-Dog from the U.S. My Lovely iDog has 170 different tunes and 120 different color patterns, while my regular I-Dog has 20 tunes and only five patterns. My regular I-Dog also doesn’t move to the music, it just bobs its head back and forth and moves its ears over and over again. As you can well imagine, I like my Lovely iDog better and rarely use my other one. I’m pretty sure that the United States Apple Macintosh manufacturers have taken a little trip to Japan to see what their secret is, so if you want to wait for a better version of the I-Dog in the U.S., they’ll be selling it around Febuary. Well, I hope this helped! Oh, and here’s a picture of iRene. (Aren’t I clever?) :-)

Sue, the reason that your iDog is turning off after five minutes is because you can’t leave it alone that long. Try pressing its nose or moving your hand in front of its face every couple of minutes- the only reason its doing that is to save its battery power when you forget to turn it off.

Dude, finally, iDog comes to the USA! Actually,
the iDog is pretty fun. Just let it sit near a speaker,
crank up the volume, and it dances and flashes lights! And, you can make it happy by either waving
your hand abowe its head (petting) or pressing it’s nose. BTW, for the people who have the japanese
manual, (you micht know this) once you’ve turned
iDog on (press the nose) you can turn it off by holding down the nose for 5 secs.

Jessica, you can turn up the volume on your iDog by simply turning up the volume on your music player, or if your iDog is not plugged in to a music player, just push in your idog’s nose (but not to long or it will turn off!) and press the two buttons on the top of its head- right for up and left for down.

At the moment i have to keep pressing the nose etc to keep it going – when i go back to work and use it on my desk i don’t want to have to keep playing with it – just for it to play my music.

4 all u people who dont know were to get a manual in english, there is a complete copy of it at: http://www.dutchguard.com/p-I-Dog.html

o, and by the way, 4 all the stupid ppl who haven’t even tried the product, i think the sound is good, and u can get it in toys r us 4 $30, and its actaully adorable when it starts moving its ears and head. the best thing about it is that u dont have to have an ipod to listen to musiac w/ it. it works w/ anything that has a headphone jack including a computer. its also quite small, so the portability is very efficient. u can also buy a carrying case 4 it but the design it more 4 kids. i must say its more like a toy than a speaker, although the sound is very good, so i would recomend it as a gift for kids. i would know ths because i am one! take it from me, the iDog is a graet gift for anyone between the ages of 9-14.

I just got one from “St. Nick” It’s pink and it’s sooo cute! you can connect it to your mp3 player and a portible radio and there’s a microphone on it so you can put it wherever there’s music! lol! :-) It’s adorable

I got an idog! He is AWSOME! He was nineteen bucks, when I got one I thot it was cool, then I thot it sucked after a couple days, and I hid him in my closet then I got an mp3, and I thot it would not work on Snoopy (that is his name) so he stayed hidden for six more months, then my cousin (she is a HUGE snoop) started going through my closet and found his plug and him, and I pluged him in, and it… WORKED! He danced, and played my music, and I can plug my head phones into his three way cord, so he is great for road trips! (It won’t bug my parents) And he is really cute. (Not as cute as my real dog Buster but still cute)

BYE BYE! Kiss Kiss, -jessie

iDog is crap. It had absolutely TERRIBLE sound and was a complete waste of 30 dollars, even though mine was a gift. You can’t even hear the music because the motor that moves the body is so daggome loud!! Also, if you are talking to someone on the phone or for some reason want to turn it off by pausing your ipod, IT DOESN’T WORK!!! It keeps barking and won’t SHUTUP!

I will be getting my idog happy (Blue – Japan version) this weekend. I’m so thrilled….My Dar says that the sound is not bad when you hook it to ipod and use it as a speaker.

HELP!!! HOW DO I MAKE MY IDOG STOP WHINING!!!

So,
I got a used Idog from a friend. She was giving it away because it whined all the time. It started out fine–I put it in front of the stereo & my idog rocked out! But now, all it does is whine and whine and whine.

It displays the following color pattern:

all green, all green, all yellow, all orange, all red, then whine.

I’ve tried petting & feeding it. I even thought maybe it was just lonely so I listened through the whining for 15 minutes while feeding it music–but no help!

I also tried resetting it.

Nothing works!

Hey all you readers,

I own the I-dog and it is MUCH better than the iDog since it has NONE of the problems I’ve heard and read that iDog has. It sounds great, doesn’t whine, and tho the lights r kind of confusing, its a simplistic, modern addition to any collection of mp3 devices. (stereos,mp3 players, etc) of course its only my opinion the I-Dog is less complicated than the iDog, so don’t make any descisions bout the matter after reading this
