Admittedly it may not quite meet the Quadrophenia quota of mirrors. Or indeed the Mod-based angst of another era. But there is still something suitably moody about this man sat on his scooter. Sullenly staring. In Shinjuku.

Tokyo Times is owned and run by me, Lee Chapman, a long-term resident of Tokyo who arrived in 1998 for ‘a year or two’, and, for a myriad of reasons, stayed put.
Japan means many things to many people, but Tokyo Times is how I see it. The places. The people. The day-to-day situations. All of it shot using a Leica, a Nikon and a selection of lenses.
My photographs have appeared in the Guardian and Japan Times, plus numerous magazines and books. Should you wish to use any, or simply ask a question, you can get in touch with me here.

Cool. Very cinematic.
Cheers Ank!
Love it – it’s so good, I don’t think you could have done much better by getting him to pose for you.
Thanks Jessica. I spotted him as I was crossing the road, and luckily he never changed his gaze or expression as I quickly fired of a shot.
That’s the right word. Cinematic! The picture has that elusive feeling of a deep story behind. Like it so much!
Good to hear you like it. It’s an image that did something for me too, but what, exactly, I’m not sure.
