It’s not unusual at all to see train travellers in Tokyo either utterly worn out from work, or worse for wear from one too many. This fella, however, was so tired after a tipple or ten that even the seat was an unsteady step too far.

Tokyo Times is owned and run by me, Lee Chapman, a long-term resident of Tokyo who arrived in 1998 for ‘a year or two’, and, for a myriad of reasons, stayed put.
Japan means many things to many people, but Tokyo Times is how I see it. The places. The people. The day-to-day situations. All of it shot using a Leica, a Nikon and a selection of lenses.
My photographs have appeared in the Guardian and Japan Times, plus numerous magazines and books. Should you wish to use any, or simply ask a question, you can get in touch with me here.

Simply awesome. I’ve seen some disorderly behaviour on trains in my lifetime but it seems Japanese people wont bother you even in a completely plastered state.
Yeah, he was simply left to sleep where he was — the odd glance the only reaction. In fact it’s hard to see anyone bothering him ’til he reached the end of the line, when the staff would have had to try and wake him up.

I can’t imagine that was terribly comfortable. Poor guy will be nursing a sore neck and back in addition to his hangover. Hopefully a lesson learned.
Yes, it’s hard to imagine the following day being anything other than painful.
And no one seems to care.
No, not in the slightest.
I just saw a similar scene!!

Yes, there are a lot of them about!
Such a uncomfortable position to sleep! I think he able to sleep is so much better than those who make extreme intolerant behaviours like shouting etc….
Yeah, apart from taking up a few seats, he wasn’t causing any bother at all.
When my daughter was a toddler she would regularly sleep like that. Maybe he’s been reborn?
