Away from the neon lights and busy crossings that have seemingly come to define central Tokyo, there’s another, very different side to the city. One that is quieter, older and an awful lot slower.

Tokyo Times is owned and run by me, Lee Chapman, a long-term resident of Tokyo who arrived in 1998 for ‘a year or two’, and, for a myriad of reasons, stayed put.
Japan means many things to many people, but Tokyo Times is how I see it. The places. The people. The day-to-day situations. All of it shot using a Leica, a Nikon and a selection of lenses.
My photographs have appeared in the Guardian and Japan Times, plus numerous magazines and books. Should you wish to use any, or simply ask a question, you can get in touch with me here.

I wonder how the content of the local combinis in those areas are different… I mean, those people don’t buy M&M’s and Coca Cola, surely
Pretty much the same. Or at least it seemed that way. But there are not as many as there are in other parts of the city.
What district in Tokyo would you say has the most neighborhoods like this one?
Probably east Tokyo I reckon.
I was bor and bred in the eastern part of Tokyo near the place which is famous for Toransan movie. There were many places like the narrow and old houses close together but the different thing between those of the days and the picture taken by Mr.Lee; in those days full of energy in those narrow streets, children were running along everywhere and the society in which everyone respected older people.
I think there were still the atmosphere of Edo period merchants’ NAGAYA streets. But there still are such atmosphere of course; you can feel it sure when you walk around shitamachi area. Let’s do it.
Only you can feel it by walking along aimlessly.
Yeah, it’s certainly a very different Tokyo. One that I like more and more the longer I’m here too.
Looks like the hustle bustle is a little further along, and one is returning, one is heading in.
I will do more aimless practise to feel a different daylight, and maybe one day even in Shitamachi area.
Mr Lee might get a free ride if he’s not too careful with that traffic

That would have been something! Not sure she’d have been happy to push me about for long though…
